Octavio Carrasco
Octavio has been interested in the power of music to transform the human condition since he was small. The relationship between art, creative acts, and the vibrations of the musical realm provide a rich field of material for considering what we share in common as human beings, and how we come to terms with our place in the world.
His academic studies are grounded in his time living in Guatemala, Spain (Barcelona is his favorite world city!) and the Czech Republic. His research builds on an early interest in the social significance of the music of Tupac Shakur, and what it meant to young people. Octavio further developed an interest in “Music, Art, and Social Change” as a framework to understand US. History. Coupled with his participation in the arts and music program at Common Ground on the Hill in Westminster Maryland, Octavio continues to explore how art can bring us together.
Octavio’s primary mode of transportation is walking, using the “eyes in his feet” to remain connected with his surroundings. His favorite animal is the sea turtle, and his main hobby is juggling book loans at ALL the local libraries.
Teaching Style & Approach
Octavio explains in his own words:
"I prefer in-person class gatherings! But interesting situations call for creative solutions. I strive to use as many forms of information and media as possible to provide a rich framework to consider the material. I believe in the wisdom of the group and invite participation.
A typical session will involve inviting the class to contribute feedback around a work of art, an idea, or an argument, while providing a variety of supporting information and historical context.
I prefer a Socratic approach to information, and employ a creative and critical pedagogical style. Discussion, investigation, and evaluation are central tenets of my approach to learning. I view the classroom as a space for growth and exchange, and I always return to the premise that we must respect each other first and foremost. We will not always agree, but we do have to respect one another.
I invite feedback, participation and most importantly, questions. As my teacher Ira Zepp always said, 'Questions bring us together. Answers divide us.' I am always open to diving further into the material. I also believe in accountability and transparency.
"The class is very interesting and informative.Octavio is highlighting perspectives on the civil rights movement of which I was never aware. He is especially good at eliciting class participation, and is most responsive to students needs."
"Octavio's style of teaching is wonderful. Well thought out information. He strongly encourages student participation. Conducts an informative and interesting I class. He encourages student participation."
