Class Overview
Learn to develop black and white silver gelatin 35mm film at home! Black and white film development is the foundation for developing all other film types (color negative, color positive and movie film). Take control of your film by understanding the science and methodology behind silver gelatin film development.
In this course you will learn the tools and techniques necessary to properly develop your own film. Discover special processing tricks, experiment with the variables to understand the results and learn the science behind the process.
At the end of this course you will understand grain, different development methods, pushing and pulling film, and proper film storage. We will also explore what you can do with your film once it is developed.
Supplies Needed
Please have the items listed below ready before the class:
- 2-3 airtight storage vessels (preferably light tight as well)
- 2-3 beakers or other dedicated measuring vessels
- Funnel (dedicated)
- Film camera
- At least 3 rolls of film (not shot to start): 1-2 low iso; 1-2 high iso; or 1 ea high, medium & low.
- Developer
- Fixer
- Film developing tank
- Clips and space to hang film away from dust
- Timer
- Ability to load film into tank in darkened environment—a changing bag or dark room (at night)
- Optional: Scale, Stop Bath, Photo-Flo
