Class Overview

Boaters, are you interested in becoming a professional mariner? Mariners, would you like to get your Able Seaman (AB) endorsement on your Credential?

This class is designed to help you learn the topics you need to know to successfully complete the Able Seaman exams and practical, helping you prepare for the test in advance.  The format of this class will include structured lessons prepared by the instructor with about 30% of the time for students to ask specific questions to guide your learning process. Exam topics covered will be Deck General, Deck Safety, Navigation General, and Rules of the Road.

Students will receive a packet of handouts to use as a resource, provided by the instructor.  It is strongly encouraged that anyone taking this class first completes How to Get your Merchant Mariner Credential class (offered in winter 2025). This class is also a precursor to the 100 Ton Prep class offered in spring 2025 (on the website starting 2/25/25).

  • Marlinspike Seamanship including knots and splicing
  • Safety and survival gear including immersion suit practice
  • Fire Fighting and Prevention
  • Ship Construction and Deck Fittings
  • Mooring, line handling and anchoring theory and practice
  • Watching standing and lookout procedures
  • Rules of the Road, compasses and Aids to Navigation
  • Pollution prevention and Control
  • Emergency Towing

 

Who Might Enjoy This Class?

  • Prerequisite: 180 days of documented sea service or equivalent recreational small-boat sea time
  • Mariners who have a minimum of 180 days of documented sea service or equivalent recreational small-boat sea time
  • Recreational boaters who are interested in becoming professional mariners
  • People who plan to take their AB tests at a Regional Exam Center (REC) who would like assistance learning, studying, and preparing for the test
  • This class is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED for anyone considering the 100 Ton Test Prep class offered in the next quarter

 

Supplies Needed

Please bring clothes for occasional outdoor instruction in winter weather.
