Martin Brendecke is a freelance type designer from Seattle who specializes in creating medieval-inspired fonts.

Originally a botanist, Martin got a BA in Agroecology at The Evergreen State College in 2014. He developed an interest for graphic design in 2018 and graduated from the Seattle Central Creative Academy in 2021. During his time at Seattle Central, he drew his first typeface and went on to get a master’s (DNSEP) in type design in Amiens, France, in 2025.

Martin has lived in the United States, Germany, Brazil, and France and speaks English, French, German, and Portuguese. He has a deep interest in culture, history, and communication. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays bagpipes, bass guitar, and flute.

Teaching Style

Martin’s mission as a teacher is to cultivate the creative voice of each individual student. Drawing from his diverse academic background, his method strikes a balance between theory and practice. Hands-on workshops are a centerpiece of his curriculum. Instead of a cookie-cutter approach, Martin meets each student where they are at with specialized resources and critique. He prefers to approach class as a conversation: providing a framework for students to bring their own experience to the table.
