Class Overview

Are you bilingual and interested in learning professional interpreting skills? Whether you are brand new to the field, or have some experience and would like training, learn about interpreting, and gain experience doing Spanish/English interpretation in this hands-on class. 

This class focuses on the development of skills needed to become a professional interpreter. Explore how to work in the sight translation mode, and gain an introduction to note-taking and consecutive interpreting. Learn about preparation, linguistic research skills, and available technologies for interpreters. Discover how to efficiently provide a high-quality interpretation service. 

Gain skills that will help you apply your language abilities to interpreting assignments in a professional and prepared manner. 

Successful completion of our Translation and Interpretation Fundamentals Certificate program is strongly recommended, but no previous translation and/or interpretation experience is required. 

Learning Objectives

  • Create a high-quality interpreting service
  • Develop and improve sight translation skills
  • Learn basic note-taking techniques for working as an interpreter
  • Practice and complete small interpreting assignments 
  • Self-evaluate the quality of interpreting 
  • Reflect on criticism from other interpreters in order to improve the quality of the interpretation

Who Might Enjoy This Class?

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills and the ability to comprehend English and Spanish at an educated near-native level. Successful completion of our Translation and Interpretation Fundamentals Certificate program is strongly recommended, but not required. No previous translation and/or interpretation experience is required. The age minimum is 18.

  • Students who have successfully completed the Translation and Interpretation Fundamentals Certificate program offered by Continuing Education at Seattle Central College 
  • Novice interpreters who would like to improve their practical interpretation skills
  • People who are bilingual who would like to become a professional interpreter in the future
  • Professionals who are often asked to interpret at work for their customers/clients but who have never received any formal interpreting training
  • Translators who wish to provide interpretation services in the near future
