Can You Spell Your Name in ASL?

"Learn" in ASL hands and each hand has different skin tones

Have you ever wanted to learn American Sign Language (ASL)? Use this cheat sheet to get started with basic fingerspelling!

ASL is a unique visual-spatial language, using the face and body as well as hand movements. Like other languages, it has its own grammar and activates the brain in exciting and healthy ways. With approximately 11 million people in the US who are deaf, or who have serious difficulty hearing, learning ASL can be a useful way to communicate with more people and get to know the Deaf community and culture.

You can register now for an American Sign Language class. And if you already have basic ASL skills, this fall we are offering a new class to focus on fingerspelling for students who have taken two quarters of ASL, or the equivalent: ASL Fingerspelling.

Happy signing!
