Dora Oliveira

Dora's Background

Dora Oliveira has performed and taught Afro-Brazilian dance for 30 years, beginning when she joined the renowned Brazilian dance troupe, Exaltacao A Bahia in 1976. Her repertoire ranges from Afro-Brazilian dance forms through jazz, ballet, and modern dance.

After obtaining her BFA in dance from the prestigious Federal University of Brazil, Dora moved to the US and began teaching at a variety of dance studios. She has worked as a choreographer for the samba schools Vamola and SambaOlywa, and teaches for Cornish School of the Arts, Capoeira Males, and Tap Connection.

In addition to her teaching, she is continues to tour and dance professionally. She was the principal dancer with Olodum, the world famous samba bloc, and was the featured dancer during the opening credits of the PBS "Dancing" episode focusing on Brazilian dance. She currently tours the US, Canada, and South America as the lead dancer with Occeami, Gansango, and Show Brazil.

Dora has lived in Seattle for over 20 years, and has developed an ardent following of dance students. She is currently working on her BA in early childhood education.

Dora's Teaching Style & Approach

How do you present materials to your students?

I demonstrate the movement accompanied with a brief explanation. Then I allow my students to assimilate the movements and repeat them.

How do you work with and interact with your students?

I am an enthusiastic and energetic teacher that enjoys communication. I create a teaching environment that features sharing experiences. I respect individuality and promote self-expression.

I am available, active, and interactive.

What kind of classroom dynamic do you promote?

I promote a safe, stimulating, and positive learning environment. I welcome all students from all backgrounds and treat them with respect. This class is very informative, energetic, exciting, fun, and inspiring.
