Class Overview

Explore the relationship between music and religion in the human experience. 

In this class, we will start with a broad look at the development of music used in worship, as well as music as a vehicle for ideas. Explore the role music plays in social movements by looking closely at the 20th century in the United States with special attention to the role of songs in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Liberation Movement. 

Discover the religious dimensions of popular music, as well as the importance of music for social movements. Learn about the practices, meaning, values and methods used in music, social change, and religion.

We will focus on the history of music from a worship setting and moving to how music functions in the world today.

This course is part of our Senior Series, courses designed for older students offered during the daytime on diverse topics, though students of all ages are welcome!

Learning Outcomes
